How topsy turvy everything feels lately. Politics, 5 planets in retrograde, springtime coming so suddenly with heat and a burst of energy, Beyonce's lemonade (...), new moons to full moons. All these feelings are brewing around me - feminism, pop culture as a metaphor for the political world, my personal life as symbolism for the global world, and all of it as some big confusing spiritual journey, mysterious greater transformation. I can't quite articulate it, because I haven't entirely made sense of it yet, but it feels so much that we are at the forefront of a much larger change.
Retrogrades are always a time to go inward, but 5 planets at once, geez. Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Pluto, and Mercury are all retrograde right now meaning that the energy of Mars and Mercury will have us turning inward on communication and how effects our relationships (Mercury), and our emotions in relation to our work and relationships, in particular anger and aggression (Mars). And the remainder have us focusing outward to the larger world - growth and expansion (Jupiter), love and relationships (Venus), karma (Saturn), etc. And even if you feel like there's already a bit too much going on to prepare for summer then to worry about all of this, these aspects are seemingly forcing us into it.
And then all of these feelings are accompanied by the complete peace and hope that is blooming just outside. Even with such an inward stir, the natural realm keeps going, the lilacs, roses, rhododendron, everything is bursting, bird visitors from all over singing their song - sunshine, breezy dresses, daily bike rides. Our free time is now spent assembling picnics, walking Penny on the beach, tracking, learning more about the native plants, elaborate breakfasts made with the window open and music playing, eating citrus and pancakes on the deck.
So, in summary - how intense and lovely and fuzzy and large everything is! I wonder if any of you are feeling this alongside me? I'd love to know.
And, if any of you haven't picked up Taproot Magazine's latest issue MYTH I highly encourage that you do! It's really a good one - such a talented bunch all together in one place. I have photographs for two separate pieces - Plant based recipes by Sarah Davidson and some kraut stories and a cooked kraut recipe - Kapusta! by Kirsten Shockey.
